This course is like a computer science course, with focus on 'How to be an independent developer'.

Despite its name, a significant amount of computer science does not involve the study of computers themselves.

We like to follow the Danish scientist Peter Naur and prefer to call this course JWES Datalogy, to reflect the fact that the discipline revolves around data and data treatment, while not necessarily involving computers.

The broader field of database development encompasses both the classical theory of computation and a wide range of other topics that focus on the more abstract, logical, and mathematical aspects of RDBMS development.

The relationship between computer science and software engineering is a contentious issue, which is further muddied by disputes over what the term "software engineering" means, and how computer science is defined.

JWES Datalogy is studying the properties of developing database applications in general, with a special focus on all the aspects involved prior, during and after an application is deployed.

This is a 4 months course at 2 x 2 hours a week.
2 hours lecture and 2 hours lab.

Who should take this course.....

You have all but made the decision to start a new career as a developer/consultant.
You are pretty sure to understand the decision, you know some developers/consultants and it seems like the right time.
However, you want to be sure.
This course is a chance to fully vet this important career move.

Development and consuting is a profession that endures in a slow economy. In turbulent economic times such as these, companies turn to experienced consultants and developers to help them increase revenues, cut costs and become more agile.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Instituto Nacional de Estadistica predict consulting and development to be one of the fastest growing industries over the next decade.

There are two basic consulting/development career paths: working for others and working for yourself. If you don't have much experience or prefer to work in large teams, working for others is probably the wisest choice.
If you have already gained professional experience in a specialized field, becoming an independent developer/consultant provides more independence, client choices and likely more income.

This insightful course takes an inside look at key issues and challenges in making database development your career, including:

    - do you know the role of the profession?
    - are you prepared for what it takes to become a developer?
    - breaking down roles
    - how to be a developer
    - the many faces of a developer
    - understanding the many difering goals of development
    - how does one start a consulting business?
    - what are some of the less obvious aspects of selecting a consulting/developing
      career?
    - what are businessrules and how to use them?
    - how to improve processes based on the businessrules?
    - how to transform the businessrules into a working database?
    - how to rework a database into a working application?

This course helps you through this final decision to change your career to developer/consultant.
Filled with practical information and taught by an experienced independent developer and management consultant, you will discover if your skills, experience and temperament fit the developer/consultant profession.

You should consider to take this course if you:

    - are self taught in database development and want to 'fill in the gaps'
    - want to learn more about how to develop database applications
    - are already active as independent developer and want to know more about the
      other aspects involving development
    - think to start your own business in development of RDBMS

Development/consulting can be immensely satisfying, a great way to use all you have learned in your career, and can be very lucrative.

Here we give you a great opportunity to discover how to get started.
